Collette’s Review: Ahsoka Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2

Disney seems to have the best strategy for keeping subscribers because of how they plan their content. Let’s be honest; at this point, Marvel and Lucasfilm are keeping the lights on at Disney Plus. As soon as one franchise ends, the other picks up the baton.

The latest endeavor for the streaming service is giving a fan favorite the spotlight. Most fans know Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars. More recently, Rosario Dawson brought that character to life in live-action in The Mandalorian series. With only a few scenes, Dawson had fans screaming for more, and Disney delivered.

So far, this series expects you to know everything that happened in The Clone Wars and Rebels series. This makes sense because this is another Dave Filoni creation. So if you are a casual fan, prepare to be a little confused. You can figure out what’s happening by context clues, but the character motivations may not make sense without a backstory. Most of the time, the characters seem stoic and emotionless, making the pacing slow. However, that does not take away from a fantastic script.

The stand-out performances don’t come from humans but from delightful droids. David Tennant brings warmth to the droid Huyang and will quickly become a fan-favorite. The droid Chopper will also steal your heart with their few minutes of screentime.

The show itself is gorgeous. It feels like Star Wars. The costumes and production look amazing. And the world-building is brought together by a beautiful score. There is a clear setup for the season, but you may need to watch Rebels for the backstory. So far, this doesn’t seem to be an action-packed show. But the few fight scenes we get are spectacular and leave you wanting more. The first few episodes seem slow, but as we have learned, there appears to be a constant formula when it comes to Disney Plus shows. The shows start slow and end on a high. The question is will Ahsoka stick the landing? Only time will tell.

Ahsoka is streaming on Disney Plus on August 23.
