Non-Spoiler Review: Loki

From the moment Loki stole the Tesseract and disappeared in Endgame, we wondered where he went. Within seconds of episode 1 of Loki, we finally find out.

Before Loki can start his new adventure, he’s apprehended by the TVA (Time Variance Authority). Now Loki must stand trial for his time crime and face the consequences.

The first thing I noticed about Loki is how cinematic it felt. This is the first Marvel show on Disney Plus that feels like it is directly linked to the movies, mainly because Loki has a clear setup for what may be in store for the next phase in the MCU.

The dialogue is incredibly written and is almost performed like a play. Of course, we all know the God of Mischief likes to talk … a lot. And the first two episodes of Loki are jammed-packed with his gift of gab. Thankfully Owen Wilson as Mobius can keep up with the quippy dialogue. Together the two show off all of their acting skills, shedding out some stellar performances.

Hidden in the long-winded banter lies an enormous amount of world-building. There is so much information being spewed out; you may have to rewind and rewatch a few times to catch it all.

Loki has always been a fan favorite villain, and Tom Hiddleston never disappoints with his portrayal of the character. He never misses a beat or sinister smile, and I do believe this may be Hiddleston at his best.

Where the show falls short is its pacing. The first episode is very slow. I understand it’s to set up a world that we don’t know, but I often found myself zoning out. Thankfully some moments draw you back in. Also, there’s a lot introduced but never explained. I’m curious to find out if some will be revealed in Loki or saved for the upcoming films.

That being said, this show is a blast. It is unlike anything you expect it to be and is a true standout in the MCU. It will have you wondering what will happen next or who may show up next. Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson are a match made in Heaven, and the side characters are equally delightful.

I will say that if you’re thinking about waiting to binge all the episodes, you may need to rethink that choice. Much like Wandavision, I feel Loki will have the same level of conversation and theories each week. Because of this, it will be tough to avoid spoilers.

So sit back, relax and enjoy Loki being, well … Loki.
