Review: Blue Moon “Ethan Hawke is engaging until the very end”

“Blue Moon” chronicles one of legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart’s (Ethan Hawke) final nights as he confronts the future of his professional and personal life during the opening night of his former partner Richard Rodgers’ (Andrew Scott) new show “Oklahoma!”

Directed by Richard Linklater, “Blue Moon” is a slow-paced film that thoughtfully portrays the man behind the songs that warm our hearts. Ethan Hawke delivers a masterful performance, possibly the best of his career, fully immersing himself in the role and capturing Hart’s ability to charm those around him.

This film doesn’t grab your attention immediately. Its slow-moving plot takes time to engage with, but once you get into it, it’s a fantastic ride. Set in one of Broadway’s most famous hangouts, Sardi’s, “Blue Moon” features a small cast and minimal fanfare. It serves as a character study of Hart, particularly as he struggles with the success of his writing partner, who has a hit show with a new lyricist.

This film is heavily focused on monologues, delivered masterfully by Ethan Hawke and Margaret Qualley, who plays Elizabeth Weiland, Hart’s latest muse. The chemistry between the two is electric, and their banter is sure to bring a smile to your face. The film truly gains momentum when Andrew Scott appears as Richard Rogers. The tension he brings is palpable and sets the tone for the remainder of the story.

“Blue Moon” is a stunning film that is a dark horse as we enter awards season. It would be extremely surprising not to see Hawke’s name in the running for Best Actor. The film tells the story of a man who loves deeply and desperately needs to be loved in return. Although it may be slow-paced and a bit challenging to get into, it is a masterclass in how an actor can draw you into a story and keep you engaged until the very end.
