Review: We Were Hyphy, “A love letter to the musical movement.”

It was a form of Hip-Hop that swept the Bay Area. The parties, the dance battles, the car shows, and of course, the music. The documentary takes you to the subculture that is and was Hyphy. 

Some may not know its name, but you will recognize the elements. The film tells the story of the instrumental figures that helped to create the cultural movement in the Bay Area Hip-Hop scene. While Hyphy never gained as much “mainstream” attention as other music genres, it significantly influenced the industry.

We Were Hyphy explores this unique phenomenon that impacted everyday life. The filmmakers went to the root of the genre and explored how a simple beat created a new identity. Told through the people who lived it, this film is interesting and exciting. It provides a glimpse of life through the artists and Bay Area residents.
