Review: Skeleton Crew

Disney Plus series have often struggled with pacing issues, especially those under the Star Wars brand, which has been the worst offender. However, I’m happy to report that “Skeleton Crew” has successfully crossed the finish line and is likely one of the best original Star Wars properties available on Disney Plus.

“Skeleton Crew,” heavily influenced by “The Goonies” and other Annabelle properties, offers both nostalgia and a fresh perspective. The series allows viewers to explore a life often overlooked in the franchise—focusing on the people. A compelling way to evoke emotions is by having a series led by kids.

When Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith), KB (Kyriana Kratter), and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) find themselves far from the safe confines of their home planet At Attin, they hope that a Force user named Jod (Jude Law) will help them return safely to their families. Unbeknownst to these sheltered children, Jod is a pirate with his sights set on treasure.

Now, I will admit the final episode did seem a tad rushed, but for the most part, in just eight episodes, “Skeleton Crew” delivers a well-rounded story that offers a fresh perspective on a world we all know well. It successfully brings back the awe and wonder reminiscent of watching Star Wars for the first time. Add in a swashbuckling adventure with an adorable cast, and you got yourself a hit. Hopefully, Disney will take note and continue to bring just as entertaining and well-rounded stories in the future.

Also Neel has my heart.
