Review: Nuremberg “A Powerful film about an unsettling part of history”

As the Nuremberg trials begin, a U.S. Army psychiatrist (Rami Malek) develops a disturbing bond with war criminal Hermann Göring (Russell Crowe) as he seeks to understand the evil that led to the atrocities of the Holocaust.

Director James Vanderbilt’s approach to this courtroom drama, set against the backdrop of World War II, showcases the best of traditional theatrical filmmaking. The film features breathtaking cinematography that vividly captures the stark realities of the era, paired with a haunting score that elevates the emotional weight of the narrative. This powerful film not only sheds light on the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust but also remains committed to the gravity of its subject matter. With meticulous attention to detail in both visual and auditory elements, including what appears to be actual newsreels from the concentration camps, “Nuremberg” immerses the audience in a pivotal moment in history, prompting deep reflection on justice, morality, and human rights.

Vanderbilt chooses to focus on a few key players in this film. By honing in on specific characters, the film maintains a brisk pace, allowing the two-and-a-half-hour film to fly by.

Russell Crowe delivers a gripping performance as the charismatically evil Hermann Göring. In the scene where he takes the stand, you can’t help but hang on his every chilling word. He and Rami Malek share a captivating dynamic, making their connection fascinating to watch. While Malek’s performance is not as strong in the first half of the film, he steadily improves, culminating in a powerful final performance.

While the primary focus is on the characters played by Crowe and Malek, one of the most impactful scenes occurs near the climax, featuring Malek and Leo Woodall, who portrays Sgt. Howie Triest. This gripping moment unfolds at a train station, where Triest delivers the poignant line, “You want to know why it happened? People didn’t stand up until it was too late.”

While “Nuremberg” may not be a perfect film, primarily due to certain script deficiencies, it demonstrates remarkable strength in conveying a powerful narrative through exceptional performances and striking visuals. The film effectively dramatizes the aftermath of a profoundly unsettling period in history and serves as an important reminder for audiences to remember the events that transpired and to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated.
