Review & Interviews: After The Wedding

Interview with After The Wedding Cast

We had a chance to review the film After The Wedding at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Bart Freundlich and starring his talented wife Julianne Moore as the lead Theresa. She is joined by Michelle Williams, Billy Crudup and Abby Quinn.

The story follows Isabel (Williams) as she travels from an orphanage in India to New York to meet with a large donor. This large donor is none other than Theresa (Moore), a strong a successful woman that wants to help, but on her terms. Isabel is quickly whisked away to be part of Theresa’s daughter’s wedding and all the events and people that entails. Seeing someone from her past, things start to come together in her understanding while the world falls apart.

A remake of a previous film, this new version takes the idea, and ironically, throws money at it. Twists and turns become quickly apparent with some dramatic performances peppered in to show pain and resolve. Williams and Moore both deliver honest characters, but neither really likable. Abby Quinn has some good scenes, but the overall feel of the film is doom. Unhappiness in the choices the characters make and a feeling of dread for the choices they never really had seal this somber film. For a Sundance art-house film, it felt about right, but seeing it in the light of day at a regular theater gives me pause.

I've met Presidents, dined with kings, flown a stunt plane, raced on-road and off, interviewed the stars, read the book, bought the comic, played the game and kissed the girl. I also like nachos. #CoffeeIsForClosers
