During World War II, scores of female operatives were sent to help fight against the Nazi regime. A Call to Spy follows three female agents who fought in France and left a remarkable legacy behind.ย
There are many movies based on World War II. But a lot of unsung heroes are left off of the page during that time period. A Call to Spy shines a light on some of the real-life heroes who were overlooked and gives them the recognition they deserve.
Because they are often overlooked, women are perfect for espionage. Thatโs why at the dawn of World War II, a desperate Winston Churchill ordered his spy agency to train females for covert operations. Vera Atkins (Stana Katic) was put in charge to find and train these women. And she recruited two unlikely candidates. The first is Virginia Hall (Sarah Megan Thomas), who is American with a wooden leg. And the other, Noor Inayat (Radhika Apte), a British Muslim wireless operator.
Sarah Megan Thomas not only stars in the film, but she is also the writer and the producer.ย I have to commend her on this script because it is compelling. Even in its most subtle moments, this film had me on the edge of my seat, knowing that danger is always present.ย
While the film’s budget may be small, it does pack a big punch. From set design to costuming, every frame was filled with story and really took you into the time period.
The thing I enjoyed most about this movie is that it is a straight-up espionage thriller. This film does not romanticize the war, and it does not paint anyone as weak. This is a film about real-life strong women who put their lives on the line to fight for freedom.
The film does run a little over two hours. The beginning is a bit slow as it tries to identify each character. However, that speed doesnโt last long, and it picks up quickly. That being said, I wish I could have spent more time with each character. Even with the long run time, I was craving more.ย
In conclusion, A Call to Spy is thoroughly compelling even in its most subtle moments. The tension was always high and kept me on the edge of my seat. The writing is spectacular, and the acting is superb.ย
