Review: Daniela Forever
Henry Golding stars in this unique romantic drama with a sci-fi twist. Mourning the loss of his girlfriend, played by Beatrice Grannò, a DJ struggles to move on with his life. When given the opportunity to participate in a new sleep study, he seizes the chance for help. The experimental pill allows him to revisit her in lucid dreams, where he can rewrite the past and create new memories. As he explores this newfound ability to change their history, he begins to question the nature of their relationship and whether either of them were ever truly happy.
“Daniela Forever” is a compelling film concept that embraces its unique storytelling. Director Nacho Vigalondo has created a captivating world that grabs your attention. His use of aspect ratio to distinguish between the real world and dreams is truly original, complemented by impressive colorization and camera work.
While the concept provides an intriguing perspective on portraying grief, the film loses its impact halfway through. The first half is engaging and keeps you on the edge of your seat, eagerly awaiting answers. Unfortunately, once you reach the midpoint, it begins to lose its energy and starts to drag. Thankfully, Henry Golding’s charm is strong enough to help you get through the rest of the film. Casting Golding was brilliant because the main character is not likable at all. However, Golding’s charm masks the underlying issues surrounding his character.
“Daniela Forever” is an intriguing concept that ultimately falters and concludes with an unsatisfying resolution. The first half of the film is engaging, but the second half tends to drag until the final moments. Casting Henry Golding was a smart choice, as he is the main reason to keep watching.
