Review- SALVATORE: Shoemaker of Dreams

Salvatore Ferragamo traveled from Naples to America to seek a better life. After settling in California, he became Hollywood’s go-to shoemaker during the silent era. In this documentary, director Luca Guadagnino trades in his usual stories of troubled romance for a pair of pumps in this enthralling documentary.

Ferragamo’s life and work are shown through archival footage and pictures and is told through those he inspired. His designs for classic cinema helped to build the personas of characters and fill out the world presented on film. Throughout the film, we are shown the intricate details of his work that could often be missed.

Besides a few awkward cuts that became jarring to the eye, the documentary is intriguing and stylized. It’s refreshing to see some of the great artists of our time gushing about the importance of Salvatore’s work. If you’re a shoe enthusiast or just a person who loves the art involved in films, this is the perfect documentary to watch.

Incredibly awkward. Fantastically sarcastic, and very, very small. Lover of movies, musicals, & TV.
