If there is one thing I’ve learned about Jordan Peele’s films, it’s that I’m going to be confused yet entertained at the same time. In my opinion, Peele has created almost a new genre of film. There’s mystery, thrills, chills, and laughs in his movies, and it’s done tastefully. Like it or not, you will be talking about them. Mainly because you’re confused. But, also because there is usually a deeper meaning plays on your mind for days.

The Plot

So what on earth is, Nope, about? The quick non-spoiler answer is that it’s a film that centers around siblings trying to keep the family business … and also aliens.

OJ (Daniel Kaluuya) and his sister Emerald (Keke Palmer) are animal wranglers who own a ranch and supply horses for various projects in Hollywood. Suddenly, a quiet night turns into a disturbing one when they make a chilling discovery.

The Direction

In actuality, the plot is just okay. There’s nothing too deep, and the motivations of the characters aren’t spectacular. What makes Nope thrilling is Peele’s ability to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. I can generally predict the outcome of a mystery because I know all of the Hollywood tricks. But when Peele uses the cliches, it’s almost like a game of Tetris; Each piece fits perfectly into the next. However, when the outcome begins to take shape, it’s not disappointing. Instead, it almost feels like he’s patting you on the back and saying, “you did good, kid. Now the fun starts.”

And sure, you’re confused the whole time, but that’s what makes it exciting.

The Cast

The cast is spectacular, and they sell every moment in this movie. Daniel Kaluuya’s stoic unfazed looks brings intrigue to the character, while Keke Palmer’s personality completely captivates you. The two have a lovely sibling chemistry that is so believable. Palmer, in my opinion, carried the film. Her energy is infectious, and her line delivery is perfection. Another standout comes from the “Fry’s Guy” Angel (Brandon Perea). He is quite the scene stealer. And when Perea and Palmer are together, it’s gold.

The Verdict

Nope has a subpar plot, but Peele’s ability to successfully mesh Sify, horror, and comedy makes it intriguing. The approach to extraterrestrial life is surprising and unexpected. The visuals are stunning, the music choices are wonderful, and the jump scares are fun. Add in a mix of amazing actors and sprinkle in ominous sound effects, and you got yourself a blockbuster.

Some people will love this, and some will hate it. But one thing is certain; people will be talking about it. In turn, more people will see it to be a part of the conversation. That’s what makes Jordan Peele movies o exciting. I will say this is better watched with a crowd. Mine was energetic and engaged, and because of that, it sold moments that may fall flat if you watch alone. Can you take your kids? There are intense and scary moments, the F-bomb is used frequently, and there is some gore (but not too much). If you’re ok with all of that, I’d say if you have a teen, it’s safe. So, have an out-of-this-world experience and expect the unexpected in Nope.
