Crispin Glover stars as the titular character, Mr. K, a traveling magician who checks into a hotel of horrors. Planning only to stay one night, Mr. K is thrown into a nightmarish labyrinth as he tries to escape. Along the way, he meets an intriguing cast of characters, including a chaotic marching band and two quirky older women. Stuck in an endless loop, Mr. K finds himself adhering to the routines of the other guests and staff of the hotel until he can’t take it anymore and goes on a quest for freedom.
Mr. K is a complex and confusing story that takes you on a rewarding journey. Glover is as dynamic as ever in this role, and it’s a treat to watch him play in this outlandish world. He truly carries the film and makes you want to see how his journey ends. The set design is striking, with vibrant cinematography in a decaying hotel. Mr. K is bizarre and surreal, with twisted plotlines that take you on a gorgeously trippy exploration. The film does drag at times, but it’s so odd that you can’t stop watching (because you’re just trying to figure out what in the world is happening). While you’re still left with questions by the end, the enticing visuals, gripping music, and stellar performance make Mr. K a film to check out.
