Quentin Tarantino wanted Laurence Fishburne to play Luke Cage

Recently, Quentin Tarantino took to the airwaves by joining Amy Schumer on her Spotify podcast called “3 Girls, 1 Keith”. Among the things the discussed was the fact that he had condifered making a Luke Cage film in the 90’s with the starring role going to Laurence Fishburne.

ā€œThere was a time before all this Marvel shit was coming out,ā€ Tarantino said. ā€œIt was after ā€˜Reservoir Dogs,’ it was before ā€˜Pulp Fiction,’ and I had thought about doing ā€˜Luke Cage.’ Growing up I was a big comic-book collector, and my two favorite [comic books] were ā€˜Luke Cage: Hero for Hire,’ later ā€˜Luke Cage: Power Man,’ and ā€˜Shang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.’ā€

ā€œI had an idea that Larry Fishburne would’ve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, ā€˜It’s got to be Wesley Snipes.’ And I go, ā€˜Look, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.’ And they’re like, ā€˜Yeah, but he’d have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!’ And I go, ā€˜Fuck that! That’s not that important! Fuck you, you ruined the whole damn thing!ā€™ā€
