Transforming into a boxing professional with a long history of bravado in pink, is Sydney Sweeney. This time she steps into the ring to portray pugilist champ Christy Martin. Martin, a trailblazer in the boxing world, broke noses and ground as a powerhouse that paved the way for televised female boxing. Beyond the mat, we see a darker side to her life, unsupported and misunderstood by those who should heal her. This true story has multiple rounds and pulls no punches.

Christy Martin “The Coal Miners Daughter” started not as a fighter, but as a baller, as she used her aggression for woman’s basketball. And that could have been her short-lived career of choice, if she hadn’t decided to enter Tough woman contests for fun and money. With her power and athleticism, she stood out and caught the eye of a local promoter. Soon she earned her spot in the ring, taking down all competitors, albeit from a small pool at the time . Escaping her home and the secret her family wouldn’t accept, she soon connected with trainer and future husband Jim Martin (Played by Ben Foster).

Fighting many battles and earning her belts, she soon took down opponents in larger rings while being broadcast live on Showtime. Becoming a name that couldn’t be ignored, she was soon rediscovered by Boxing promoter Don King. His connections and know-how elevated her fighting and income, all the while her trainer/husband took out his anger and urges on her.

This film focuses on strength of will and the things that can weaken us, Christy Martin fought for more than money and fame, she fought for the opportunity to finally be her own true self. Sydney
Sweeney brings this story into focus and she gets lost in the role, brown hair and brown contacts are only a small part of her transformation. The mindset of a boxer and the glassy eyes of someone just looking to be accepted and loved are equally delivered by Sweeney. Heart-wrenching moment and comedic bravado show a life that always punched-up with everything she had.
