Imagine being able to create your perfect man. Everything you have ever wanted is carefully calculated to fit your every need. Dan Stevens plays the dreamy and life-like robot Tom in this German drama, made to order for Alma (Maren Eggert).
From his bird-like head movements to the vacant stare in his eyes, Stevens does a remarkable job making you believe he is a robot. But the true testament to his work is bringing the human element to the character. At times, you almost feel like he’s learning how to be a real boy. There were moments where you almost forgot that he was supposed to be a robot. And that’s not a bad thing, because Alma did too. It was almost as if you felt every emotion she did as the story progressed.
While Tom may be seemingly perfect, the movie shows what it means to be human and what it means to love. When you get down to the meat of the story, this dramedy is pretty heavy. The film plays on your emotions and makes you ponder the question, “If I could build the perfect partner, would I?”
In the end, the question still hangs in the balance, which I found brilliant. I’m Your Man is a breath of fresh air in a sea of remakes. This original story will keep you invested from start to finish. Each scene is more intriguing than the next, and the two leads are electric on screen together. If you don’t mind a good foreign film that requires reading, I’m Your Man is a perfect movie to watch. You’ll laugh and probably cry, but you’ll be entertained every step of the way.
