Review: Merrily We Roll Along “Perfect example of the right cast at the right time”
One of Stephen Sondheim’s most infamous musicals, “Merrily We Roll Along,” is also one of his biggest flops. It closed in 1981 after just 16 performances. Now, over forty years later, the musical has returned with an electrifying cast and is better than ever.
Franklin Shepard (Jonathan Groff) is a celebrated Broadway producer who has left the bright lights of Broadway for Hollywood. At first glance, it seems like everything is going well for Frank, but the reality is that he has hit rock bottom. He is divorced, his second marriage is on shaky ground, and there is a growing rift between him and his best friends, Mary (Lindsay Mendez) and Charley (Daniel Radcliffe).
The show tells the story of a 20-year friendship in reverse, from its ending to its beginning. Through Frank’s eyes, we see how the hurdles of life, love, and money can tarnish what is beautiful and pure.
Unlike most professionally recorded Broadway productions, “Merrily We Roll Along” is filmed with a cinematic approach. It uses a variety of shots, primarily close-ups of Groff’s performance, to create an immersive, intimate experience that allows viewers to connect with each performer.
The show itself is quite somber. It’s not your typical flashy Broadway production; instead, it presents some of the harsh realities of life. Our main trio does an excellent job of portraying the perspectives of adults to the fresh-faced youngsters eager to take on the world.
Radcliffe delivers one of his best performances to date, especially in the song “Franklin Shepard Inc.” Mendez impresses with her captivating vocals, and Groff can move you to tears with just a glance.
“Merrily We Roll Along” is a prime example of the right cast coming together at the right time to tell a captivating story filled with memorable songs that you’ll find yourself humming for days. This production offers theatergoers who couldn’t experience it in person a front-row seat, while also providing an opportunity for the show to attract new fans.
