Review: Cruel Summer Pilot

From executive producer Jessica Biel, the psychological mystery Cruel Summer is coming to Freeform.

The series takes place over three summers in the ‘90s. We meet Jeanette (Chiara Aurelia), your typical awkward teen who has a few good friends and a typical loving family with a tradition of waking her up every birthday. 

As the years go on, the disappearance of one of her classmates, Katie (Olivia Holt), shakes the town. Jeanette begins to take on the missing girl’s persona; she even starts to date Katie’s former boyfriend. Soon the sweet and optimistic girl she once was is gone. Her old friendships end and the birthday tradition fades away.

When Jeanette is at the height of her popularity, Katie is found. The town learns the truth about Katie’s disappearance, and Jeanette’s world starts to crumble. Now outcasted, Jeanette is forced to face the consequences of her actions.

I will admit the beginning didn’t hook me. It took a while to appreciate the story. But at its halfway point, I started to become intrigued with a few twists presented. The scattered timeline can also throw you for a loop. That being said, the time jumps do keep you on your toes and wanting to know more.  

The story and subject matter are unlike anything on Freeform’s current lineup. Some interesting twists may spark a large audience (especially former Pretty Little Liars fans.) The pace seems a bit slow, but I feel like it may kick into a new gear with time. Cruel Summer may start a bit rocky, but you will eventually be hooked, especially with the nail biter of an ending.
