Slamdance 2023 Review: The Mad Writer

Courtesy of: Slamdance Film Festival 2023

The threat of losing a critical sense. It’s a musician’s worse nightmare. For Austin Hart, better known by his stage name L’Orange, it’s a reality. In this documentary, the hip-hop producer is shown at the top of his game. He’s reluctant to tell his story because he doesn’t think it’s interesting enough, but it’s a rollercoaster of emotions for those watching.

This film takes you on a journey into the unknown for the artist as we learn more about the mysterious tumors in his ear canals. We see him go through fear and anxiety as he undergoes surgeries to save his hearing. The story is told through the artist and by those who know him best. It does a fantastic job of painting a picture of who he is and what he wants to achieve in his career. Upon first meeting L’Orange, you may not even like him. But as the story progresses and you get to know the man behind the beanie and sunglasses, you learn there’s more than meets the eye.

Overall, The Mad Writer is an incredibly made film that showcases a man’s journey through the ups and downs of his career. It’s filled with a lot of love, heart, and music. Check this one out if you have the chance.
