It has been over a decade since “Tron: Legacy” was released in theaters. The film was quite advanced for its time. Now, “Tron: Ares” takes the conversation around technology to a new level. Two major tech companies are in competition: Encom, now led by Eve Kim (Greta Lee), and Dillinger Systems, headed by Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters). Both companies see an opportunity to integrate new AI technology into our world, but when a highly sophisticated program named Ares (Jared Leto) exits the digital world and enters ours, a dangerous mission begins.
Like any “Tron” film, this one is a visual spectacle enhanced by an amazing soundtrack. What is most surprising about “Tron: Ares” is the cohesive and compelling story it tells. While at times it may feel like a long music video featuring runway walks set to techno beats from Nine Inch Nails and slow-motion action sequences, this is actually what makes it entertaining.
Director Joachim Rønning crafted an engaging atmosphere not only within the grid but also in the real world. The technological advancements are tangible, giving the Grid a renewed sense of vitality. Each system presents a unique look and feel. A particularly clever hacking scene elevates the film to new heights and stands out as one of the highlights of the movie.
Jared Leto stoehic presence helps to sell being a program. He does well with the dialogue given and you can tell as a viewer how much he loves and respects this franchise.
Even Peters is always a delight on screen, as he tends to portray villainous characters with great finesse. He fully embraces his roles, often playing characters with no moral compass. While a “tech bro” can sometimes be difficult to watch, Peters is so captivating that you can’t look away. However, the true standout is the film’s lead, Greta Lee. She grounds the movie and truly embodies the essence of a “tech” person. Her character is not exaggerated, making the story feel human and interesting.
Another standout is Jodie Turner-Smith as Athena. She expertly portrays a program. Her commanding presence resonates throughout the film, she truly feels like a machine evoking a sense of “The Terminator.”
“Tron: Ares” is not a perfect film, but it is wonderfully entertaining. There are some hokey moments, and it doesn’t feel like a traditional sequel; instead, it feels like a rebirth of the franchise. It’s a film that the whole family can enjoy, featuring amazing visuals and a fantastic soundtrack. Additionally, there are numerous Easter eggs for Tron fans to discover.
