Review: The Super Mario Bros. Movie

There is one thing The Super Mario Bros. Movie does well: nostalgia. From the music to the gameplay, this movie will have the kid in you jumping for joy.

For months all people could talk about was Chris Pratt’s nonexistent impression of Mario’s voice. Thankfully, this movie gives a reasonable explanation as to why he doesn’t sound like the classic video game character. In this adaptation, Mario (Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) are Brooklyn plumbers trying to start their own business. When things go south, they find themselves thrown into a magical world ruled by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) that’s being threatened by the villain Bowser (Jack Black). When the brothers are separated, Mario must learn how to use power-ups and find a way to save Luigi.

The story, sadly, is weak. Some moments are excellent, but nothing pulls at your heartstrings. You may say, “But this is a kid’s movie!” And yes, it is. But the core audience who will be showing up to the theater will be the 80s and 90s kids. This three-dimensional movie has a one-dimensional script, and that’s really underwhelming.

However, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is heavy on nostalgia and Easter Eggs (which is perfect for its Easter opening weekend). The theme music and notable sound effects were cleverly incorporated. When you hear the themes subtly play, it brings a sense of joy that instantly puts a smile on your face.

The animation is stunning, especially on Bowser. Even though the characters look cartoonish, the animation makes them feel real.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is fun. It’s way better than expected and may even set a new standard for how classic video games are portrayed on film. It may lack in story, but it excels in nostalgia. The animation is beautiful, the music is a delight, and the cameos are fantastic. It’s fun for the whole family, just don’t expect tears to be shed. There is a mid-credit and an end-credit scene. So stick around to see those!
