Review: The Four Seasons

Tina Fey’s latest dramedy on Netflix offers a different take from her usual work. The story follows a friend group made up of three couples whose standard vacation at a lake house takes a turn when Nick (played by Steve Carell) announces his desire to divorce his wife. As the initial shock wanes, the group grapples with profound questions, endures another disastrous vacation, and deals with Nick’s new, younger love interest (Erika Henningsen). This experience ultimately leads to events that will change their lives forever.

Tina Fey’s comedies typically feature an offbeat and quirky tone, but The Four Seasons feels surprisingly grounded in reality by comparison. The cast is filled with comedy heavyweights like Steve Carell and Will Forte, along with Colman Domingo, who not only brings humor but also the acting skills necessary to prevent the series from crossing the line into something we’ve seen before.

This eight-episode series is a remake of the 1981 film of the same name. The first two episodes set the stage for what’s to come. As the series progresses, the year unfolds for four friends, filled with laughter, awkward situations, and heartbreak. Each character has their moment to shine, but the friendship between Fey and Domingo’s characters stands out as a highlight. They play off each other so well and deliver some of the best comedic moments in the series.

With episodes lasting about thirty minutes, The Four Seasons is able to deliver a cohesive and engaging story that is wonderfully bingeable. The cast has great chemistry, and the situations portrayed resonate deeply with many viewers of a similar age.

Incredibly awkward. Fantastically sarcastic, and very, very small. Lover of movies, musicals, & TV.
