Review: The Buccaneers Season 2
Five American best friends travel to London in search of husbands. Their lives are filled with love, heartache, and a fantastic soundtrack. Season 1 of The Buccaneers captivated audiences with its anachronistic dialogue and music. In Season 2, the story picks up where we left off. In an effort to save her sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse) from an abusive marriage, Nan (Kristine Froseth) decides to marry the Duke of Tintagel (Guy Remmers) instead of running away with the love of her life, Guy (Matthew Broome). Now Nan must navigate life as a duchess and mend her broken heart.
Secrets, sorrows, deception, and love are central themes in Season 2 of the Apple TV+ show, The Buccaneers. This season comprises eight episodes, each approximately forty minutes long, and tells a coherent and engaging story while also leaving room for intrigue for another season. One of the highlights of this season is the development of each character; our young ingénues mature beautifully throughout the storyline.
In the first season, each young woman felt light and carefree. However, in the current season, these friends are feeling the weight of their decisions. Most notably, Mabel (Josie Totah) has grown more secure in herself and her sexuality. She not only provides the best comic relief of the season, but her character is also wonderful to watch, especially in tandem with Honoria (Mia Threapleton). They are one of the only same-sex couples on the show, and what is genuinely captivating is how their relationship is portrayed. The Buccaneers treats them like any other couple and refrains from using their relationship for mere viewership, unlike most series and movies that often exploit secret relationships.
This season is packed with unexpected twists and turns that will surprise and excite dedicated viewers, keeping them eager for what’s next. While the creators tried to include a lot in this season, it sometimes felt rushed, which diminished the intensity of certain moments. Nonetheless, Season 2 of The Buccaneers remains an intriguing watch, leaving you longing for a Season 3.
