Review: Stowaway

Netflix’s Stowaway is an out-of-this-world nightmare.

On their way to Mars, a three-manned crew finds themselves in an impossible and horrific situation when they learn the ship’s engineer is trapped on board.

At first, they welcome the accidental stowaway, but soon it becomes apparent that their voyage is carefully calculated only to send three people on a two-year mission. This results in depleting oxygen levels, and the crew must make difficult decisions to keep from suffocating and survive.

The claustrophobia of being confined to a ship mixed with the high stakes makes Stowaway a heart-pounding thriller.

This compelling survival drama keeps you on the edge of your seat from the minute you hit play.

There are no explosions or fight sequences, but Stowaway is action-packed in a different way. The film’s intensity never lessens, and stress levels are always high. It also makes you ponder tough questions about humanity and what you would do to survive.

The cast may be small, but it’s stellar. Shamier Anderson will grip your heart as the stowaway Michael. You’ll fall in love with his wonderment and timidness. Ultimately your love for the character will get more stressful as the situation becomes more intense.

Toni Collette plays the ship’s captain. Her character is strong and level-headed. As things take a turn for the worse, her performance becomes more captivating.

Daniel Dae Kim plays David, a scientist taking his life’s work to Mars. He’s forced to not only make a life-altering decision, but he also has to contemplate giving up all that he has worked for. His character will have you asking, “Would I do the same if given the situation?”

Anna Kendrick plays Zoe, the other scientist on board. Her compassion for Michael and the friendly competition she has with David will instantly make you love her character and root for her survival. She has a few shining moments that showcase her talent, especially the scenes with Shamier Anderson.

In conclusion, Stowaway is a thrilling drama that is brilliantly acted. The direction will make you feel like you right there on the ship with the crew. You’ll be hooked from the minute they lift off, and the ending will leave you breathless. Be ready for a stressful ride and to feel just as confined as the characters on the screen.
