Review: Smile 2

“Smile 2” is a sequel that excels in every possible way. While horror movies often push boundaries, “Smile 2” takes everything frightening from the first film and amplifies it to an intense level. Naomi Scott portrays Skye Riley, a pop star making a significant comeback after a tragedy. She serves as the emotional core of the movie, bringing depth that grounds the film and engages your feelings.

If you have seen the original, you know that an entity latches onto a person and preys on their dark thoughts and memories. Once this parasite has finished feeding, it kills its host and then attaches itself to the person who witnesses the host’s gruesome demise.

Unfortunately for pop star Diva Skye Riley, she found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time, and now a sinister entity is preying on her. The first film lacked emotional depth, which made it difficult for viewers to connect with the main character. However, in this sequel, Scott’s ability to convey emotion through her eyes draws you in and keeps you engaged until the very end.

The storyline of this sequel is much stronger than that of the first film. It’s not just a horror movie filled with jump scares and blood; while it does include elements of fear, it also features a well-rounded narrative that connects you to everyone in Skye Riley’s life. You find yourself rooting for the main character and hoping she discovers a way to survive.

“Smile 2 picks up six days after the first film, and its shocking beginning sets a striking tone for the movie. While the original was somewhat tame in terms of gore, be prepared for some of the grimmest images in this sequel. One of the strengths of this franchise is that you can never predict when a jump scare will occur.

Typically, in horror films, eerie music and sound effects hint that something frightening is about to happen. However, the Smile franchise takes a different approach: it minimizes the use of sound to heighten the scare factor. The music often fades away, and the camera stays closely focused on the characters. Just when you expect something to happen, it often doesn’t, and the jump scare occurs unexpectedly while a character is simply talking.

The tension and suspense created by writer and director Parker Finn is unlike anything seen before, making these films both thrilling and entertaining.”

“Smile 2” is an exciting sequel to the original movie. The cast is outstanding, and the director effectively uses sound and camera movements to engage the audience. The story is both emotional and thrilling, brilliantly portrayed by the lead, Naomi Scott. However, the film’s main drawback is its runtime; at two hours long, some scenes feel as though they drag on a bit too much. Overall, it is a solid sequel that leaves the audience eager to see where the franchise will head next. Be prepared for plenty of gore and frightening imagery.
