Review: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Even though the trailers didn’t create enough hype, I was excited for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. I can honestly say after watching it, my theory was correct, and the trailers did not do this film justice. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this movie was.

Shang-Chi is an origin story, but it’s not your typical one. After a mishap on a bus, Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) must confront the past that he left behind with his best friend Katy (Awkwafina) by his side.

Now, I won’t get into details because anything that is said could ruin the experience of this film for you. But I will say this, Shang-Chi has a fantastic story that leads right into the next phase of Marvel. There are many surprises and cameos that will make any fan jump for joy. The film is also unexpectedly funny. Shang-Chi has some peak Marvel humor sprinkled throughout it, mainly from Awkwafina and her fantastic reactions.

The friendship between the two leads is something I enjoyed. I loved and appreciated that they were friends and not secretly pining for each other throughout the movie. Could a romance spark in the future? Possibly, and I wouldn’t mind it. But for right now, in this movie, I love their relationship just as it was.

Shang-Chi is also just visually stunning. The cinematography was gorgeous. There are also some interesting shot choices and visuals, most of which happen during the fight sequences. The martial arts in this film were heart-pounding and jaw-dropping. Every kid is going to leave the theater trying to imitate the moves.

Speaking of theaters, Shang-Chi will be a theatrical release only on September 3rd. This film looks spectacular on the big screen, and there’s no better feeling than seeing a Marvel movie at the theater. But, if you still feel uncomfortable in that setting, it will hit Disney plus 45 days after its release.

In conclusion, Shang-Chi and the Legend of The Ten Rings is a surprising joy ride of a movie. It will have you smiling from start to finish. The story is strong but does falter when it comes to the villain. If anything, that was Shang-Chi’s weakest point.

The visuals are captivating, and the fight scenes will have you on the edge of your seat. The chemistry between the two leads is off the charts, and their witty banter will have you smiling from start to finish. This is the perfect movie to enjoy with your family while kick-starting the next phase of Marvel movies.
