Review: On Swift Horses

Courtesy of Sony Pictures

Everything seems perfect in Muriel’s (Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Lee’s (Will Poulter) relationship until Lee’s brother, Julius (Jacob Elordi), comes to town. Tension builds and sparks fly between Muriel and Julius, but their connection is not sexual; rather, it conveys an intriguing, unspoken understanding. Meanwhile, Lee remains oblivious and tries to establish a life for himself and Muriel out west in California.

As Lee and Muriel embark on this new phase of their relationship, Julius goes his separate way, promising to return. He heads to Las Vegas, where he becomes involved in a passionate relationship with Henry (Diego Calva). Meanwhile, Muriel tentatively explores her sexuality with a woman in town named Sandra (Shasha Calle).

“On Swift Horses” had the potential to be this year’s sweeping epic drama, but unfortunately, it fell flat. The elements are there: a ridiculously attractive cast, a captivating period setting, and an intriguing story with a hint of forbidden love. However, the script is dull and lacks the romance needed to be truly memorable.

Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones are electric together on screen. Unfortunately, their chemistry is cut short far too quickly. The moments they do share are filled with longing glances that almost make you believe something romantic is developing between them. However, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that their connection is not romantic; rather, they share a deeper understanding as two individuals who have similar desires regarding their attraction to the same sex.

Muriel and Julius share a passion for gambling, which plays a significant role in their lives. Muriel enjoys betting on horse races, while Julius prefers playing cards. Although this gambling allows them to make a living, it also serves as a subtle metaphor for the risks they take in their personal lives. Both of their romances could have severe consequences if discovered.

While the underlying themes in the story are strong, the film fails to fully captivate the viewer. The stakes never seem high enough, and the pacing lacks the ability to maintain interest. Visually, the film is stunning, featuring beautiful cinematography and enticing music. Unfortunately, these elements alone are not enough to be swept away.
