Never Have I Ever is Netflix’s newest teen dramedy that comes from comedy queen Mindy Kaling. The show follows a teenage Indian American girl on a mission to hook up with the most popular boy in school.
Through the brilliant narration of Tennis star John McEnroe, we meet Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) who is quite possibly the most relatable character I have ever had the pleasure of seeing on television.
Ramakrishnan plays Devi with a sweet swagger that brings charm and wit with every line she speaks. Or, as Devi would say, “She’s a Goddamn delight!”
Through 10 episodes we watch Devi and her friends (Ramona Young and Lee Rodriguez) navigate their way through teenage life. This show deals with love, loss, culture, and sexuality.
I often get hooked on shows that represent all of the ups and downs that come with life. When it’s something real you don’t have to try to be funny, it just comes naturally. That’s exactly what happens in Never Have I Ever.
Each episode is so relatable it hurts. The awkwardness that comes with your first crush, the terrifying feeling you’re not living up to your parent’s standards, and losing someone you love.
While some scenes may hit you in the feels, there’s always comedic relief around the corner. Much of that is thanks to Devi’s mother (Poorna Jagannathan) who is as elegant as she is hilarious. She was truly the highlight of the series for me and gave one of the best comedic performances I have ever seen.
This show is thoroughly entertaining. I wanted to stay in the lives of these characters for as long as possible. I binged the whole season in one night, which is fairly easy since each episode is roughly 25 minutes.
While the episodes may be short, there’s not a stone left unturned by the end. Every character arch was done beautifully and the story has a full circle moment to it. I will be waiting for another season.
So, curl up with a good blanket, grab a big bag of chips, and make sure you have some tissues on hand.
