Anna (Sofia Carson) has a plan: to fulfill her childhood dream of attending Oxford University before starting a life-changing job. However, she didn’t anticipate falling in love with her charming professor, Jamie (Corey Mylchreest). What’s surprising about this film is that the main conflict isn’t the fact that he is her professor. Instead, this adaptation of the novel of the same name relies on other predictable romantic movie tropes. While this doesn’t necessarily make the film bad, it does render it somewhat boring.
There are two common strategies that films in this genre use to mend the monotony of a predictable plot. The first is to introduce a comedic best friend who embarks on their own journey of love. The second is to intensify the romantic elements. “My Oxford Year” employs one of these strategies. Anna’s new friends at Oxford, Maggie (Esmé Kingdom) and Charlie (Harry Trevaldwyn), are welcome additions to the story and provide comic relief, but unfortunately, they are severely underutilized. As for the romance, there is nothing particularly swoon-worthy in this film. In fact, the most moving moments occur within the last fifteen minutes.
“My Oxford Year” is a lackluster addition to the roster of romantic films on Netflix. While the film is not entirely without merit, it fails to captivate. The overall plot is sufficient to keep viewers engaged, largely thanks to Corey Mylchreest’s charm. Unfortunately, there isn’t enough romance in this romantic drama, which ultimately makes it a dull experience.
