Review: My Dead Friend Zoe

Occasionally, a gem of a movie shines through and completely steals your heart. “My Dead Friend Zoe” is that film. Inspired by first-time filmmaker Kyle Hausmann-Stokes’ two platoon mates, this deeply personal story offers a creative take on the post-war experience.

Merit (Sonequa Martin-Green) is haunted by the death of her best friend, Zoe (Natalie Morales). Both served in the military and promised to have each other’s backs in both war and civilian life. Initially, when Merit attends a therapy session with other veterans, you might think Zoe is still with her. However, it quickly becomes clear that she is a ghost tethered to Merit’s thoughts, influencing her behaviors.

“My Dead Friend Zoe” offers a refreshing and playful perspective on a serious subject. Rather than portraying Zoe as a haunting phantom, the film presents her as a quick-witted best friend, delivering memorable one-liners that lighten the mood. Natalie Morales brings depth to the role with her effortless coolness and sharp comedic timing. Meanwhile, Sonequa Martin-Green delivers a powerful performance that guides viewers through a spectrum of emotions, combining strength with heartfelt sincerity.

The pacing of this story is perfect. As Merit tends to her grandfather, played by Ed Harris, she finds herself haunted by her past experiences. Through evocative flashbacks triggered by her memories and post-traumatic stress, the events surrounding Zoe gradually come into focus, revealing a deeper understanding of what transpired.

This film, crafted by veterans for veterans, and serves as a heartfelt tribute to all who have served or are currently serving in our military. It beautifully conveys the message that no one is alone in their struggles. While we may carry the weight of our past experiences, symbolized by the ghosts that haunt us, the story ultimately offers hope and reassurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
