Review: His Three Daughters

Three estranged siblings come together to care for their ailing father in a cramped New York City apartment. Amid tragedy, can they mend their broken relationship? Or will their already severed bonds fracture even more?

“His Three Daughters” unfolds like a live play. While this format can sometimes detract from a movie’s appeal, in this instance, it enhances the viewing experience. The lack of elaborate sets, a small cast, and the confined setting of a New York City apartment all contribute to the film’s tension, immersing the audience in the world of this dysfunctional family.

Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) lives with her father and has been caring for him for a while. As his condition worsens, her sisters, Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) and Katie (Carrie Coon) come to the apartment to spend their last moments with him. The three sisters never got along and lived completely separate lives. Christina and Katie are now invading Rachel’s space, making her feel like an outsider in her home. These three are the main focus. Although a few others step into the apartment, no one is there to help ease the tension.

The film meticulously emphasizes the passage of time, creating a heightened awareness of its constant presence. Scenes unfold deliberately, lingering to the point of discomfort, while awkward silences pervade the atmosphere. In most films, these elements might detract from the viewing experience, yet they intensify the tension, infusing each frame with an ominous sense of impending doom.

Shooting this on film instead of digitally was the perfect choice. The film captures the raw, unpolished essence of the story, giving it an authentic and natural feel. It’s almost like watching a real-life film reel, immersing you in the genuine and lived-in experience.

“His Three Daughters” is a beautifully crafted film, from its cinematography to the performances. Each character is richly developed and has a complete arc. It’s an authentic story with three outstanding lead actresses. This emotionally powerful and raw film will leave a lasting impact, making it one of the best films you’ll see this year.

Incredibly awkward. Fantastically sarcastic, and very, very small. Lover of movies, musicals, & TV.
