Review: Desperados

Courtesy: Netflix

Desperate to save her budding relationship, a woman enlists the help of her two best friends to travel to Mexico and delete a nasty e-mail she sent to her boyfriend.

Wesley (Nasim Pedrad) has had a bit of bad luck when it comes to winning at life. She’s jobless and looking for love in all the wrong places. After a failed blind date with Sean (Lamorne Morris), she falls head over heels for Jared (Robbie Amell). To make this relationship last, Wesley sacrifices everything real about her to become the girl of Jared’s dreams.

Suddenly Jared goes silent for five days, and Wesley spirals into a drunken mess with her two best friends Brooke (Anna Camp) and Kaylie (Sarah Burns). She writes her frustration out in a nasty e-mail. After it’s sent, she finds out Jared was not ignoring her, but was in a coma and is currently at a hospital in Mexico. Wesley guilt trips Brooke and Kaylie into flying to Mexico to delete the e-mail and save her relationship.

While funny, Desperados is also very cringe-worthy. It has the perfect set up to be another hilarious girl-gang comedy. Unfortunately, it’s senseless and silly. Desperados is a movie where you have to let go of logic and just take it for what it is, a ridiculous comedy. There are a lot of laugh out loud moments. That being said, there are also some awkward, and at times grotesque ones too. In fact, the “out there” scenes are the ones that fall a little flat, and the jokes never seem to land.

The best moment in the whole film is the e-mail scene. It is so awkwardly relatable to any girl watching. The three actresses really play well off of each other, and it not only makes the scene work but the movie as a whole.

Nasim Pedrad is effortlessly funny. And while she may be the main focus of the film, I actually enjoyed Anna Camps performance the most. She had some great bits throughout the movie. Her comebacks were always on point, and often you find yourself looking at how she’s reacting to the situation happening.

If you’re looking for something light that will give you a few giggles, give Desperados a try.

Stream it on Netflix July 3rd.

While funny, Desperados is also very cringe-worthy. The three leads have great chemistry and make the movie a light and fun experience.
