Review: Coda

It’s been a long time since a movie struck a chord with me, and Coda hit me in the heart so hard I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. This is a little movie that leaves a big impact. It’s the kind of story that sticks with you for days. The kind you can’t shut up about and is your first recommendation to anyone needing something to watch.

Over the years, streaming services have had a few hidden gems. Unfortunately, it’s become quantity over quality for some, and those gems have become even rarer to find. Apple TV+ seems to be heading in the opposite direction as others. They’re putting the work into what they stream on their service. Apple is focusing on the story and how it’s told. Coda is the result of tender care and the want to make something great.

Ruby (Emilia Jones) is the only hearing person in her family. Because of this, she acts as a translator for her parents (Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur) and her older brother (Daniel Durant).

Unbeknownst to her family, Ruby loves to sing but has left her passion on the back burner in lew of helping her family with their fishing business. When her talent is discovered by her choir teacher (Eugenio Derbez), he pushes her to take time for herself and follow her dreams. Torn between her family and her future, Ruby must figure out what path to take.

This film feels so personal. The director pulls you into Ruby’s life and makes you feel like an honorary member of her family. You feel the love, the frustrations, the sadness, and the laughter.

This could have easily been another story about a teenager that you watch once and forget. Instead, it leaves a mark. I can honestly say Coda is one of the best films I’ve seen this year. It will leave you smiling through tears and your heart filled with overwhelming joy. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll be devastated and happy. Coda is brilliant and beautiful. You should run to your TV and watch it.
