Review: Bridgerton Season 2 – “Just as delectable as the first”

The first season of Bridgerton was filled with scandal, drama, comedy, and romance. And the series swept many off their feet. But could it do it again?

My fear going into season 2 is that it would not live up to the hype of its predecessor. But if season one was a bag of chips that you couldn’t stop eating, season 2 is a delectable piece of cake that you try and savor with every bite.

The second season of the Shonda Rhimes drama begins with Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (Johnathan Bailey) on the hunt for the perfect wife. His search to find the woman that fit and lead his legacy falls short until one Royal Ball changes everything. He sets his sights on the queen’s new “Diamond” of the season, Edwina Sharma (Charithra Chandran); the only problem is he’ll also have to win over her disapproving sister Kate (Simone Ashley).

The first season was, in a word, sexy. You could cut the tension between Simon and Daphane with a knife. And while the Bridgerton family as a whole is interesting, I was worried how the season would fair losing the character that created a social media frenzy.

Thankfully, the story makes up for the loss of the dreamy Duke. And the Viscount claims his place on the list of “perfect men written by women” trope.

Anthony Bridgerton was more of a playboy in season one; he still has his promiscuous moments, But the Viscount’s backstory in season two humanizes him and clarifies why he must be the family leader.

As for Kate Sharma’s story, her past, in a way, mirrors Anthony’s. The two both have a legacy and duty to live up to. And both care deeply for their families.

The chemistry between the two is off the charts. In fact, the stolen longing glances have almost, if not more sexual tension than Daphane and Simon.

Multiple subplots are set up through the season, which is its major downside. By the time we get to the meat of the other stories in this eight-episode arc, the season is pretty much finished and will leave some fans craving more. Which is good, I guess.

So gentle readers, if you are a fan of the series, you will undoubtedly love this season. Romance and scandal fill every episode. While it may have a few ends that need mending, It’s just as lush and lustful as season one. So put on a pot of tea, grab a comfy blanket, and prepare for a night of binge-watching until the day breaks and the birds start singing. (Not that I would know anything about that; I spent a perfectly normal amount of time watching this).
