Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively reprise their roles as Stephanie and Emily in Paul Feig’s femme fatal film, Another Simple Favor. Emily crashes Stephanie’s book signing to invite her to Capri for her wedding to rich Italian businessman Dante (Michele Morrone). However, their extravagant holiday is disrupted as murder and betrayal lurk around every corner.
Another Simple Favor captures the spirit of the first film while taking things to the next level with its outrageous and entertaining twists. While the original focused on the murder mystery aspect and incorporated a tinge of camp, this sequel fully embraces camp as its defining feature. With stunning scenery, beautiful outfits, and a soundtrack to die for, Another Simple Favor almost feels like a parody of classic Hollywood Noir.
Kendrick hits every comedic note while Lively continues to “match her freak.” The two have fantastic on-screen chemistry that radiates the sexual tension necessary to create a perfect balance between being grounded and somewhat uncomfortable. They play off each other beautifully, delivering every quip in perfect sync. Their supporting cast keeps pace as well, with Henry Golding reprising his role as Sean. Previously a charming love interest, Golding now plays a hilarious, drunken ex who must endure a vacation with his two former flames.
The film is visually lush and looks fantastic due to its budget, but it carries a “streaming service” vibe. The writing makes it feel more like a limited series that has been pieced together to form a movie. Fortunately, this doesn’t detract from the overall experience; it simply gives the impression that it’s more suited for watching at home in your pajamas. If they decide to continue this franchise, perhaps a limited series styled like The White Lotus would suit these murderous moms well.
Another Simple Favor has it all: drama, comedy, fashion, and a delightfully insane murder mystery that is pure camp. Fans of the first film will devour every moment of this sequel and will be left wanting more. So, make your dry martini (no ice!), put on your finest silk pajamas (or sweatpants), grab some popcorn, and enjoy Another Simple Favor.
Streaming on Prime Video May 1st.
