Quentin Tarantino wanted Laurence Fishburne to play Luke Cage
Recently, Quentin Tarantino took to the airwaves by joining Amy Schumer on her Spotify podcast called “3 Girls, 1 Keith”. Among the things the discussed was the fact that he had condifered making a Luke Cage film in the 90’s with the starring role going to Laurence Fishburne.
โThere was a time before all this Marvel shit was coming out,โ Tarantino said. โIt was after โReservoir Dogs,โ it was before โPulp Fiction,โ and I had thought about doing โLuke Cage.โ Growing up I was a big comic-book collector, and my two favorite [comic books] were โLuke Cage: Hero for Hire,โ later โLuke Cage: Power Man,โ and โShang-Chi: Master of Kung Fu.’โ
โI had an idea that Larry Fishburne wouldโve been the perfect guy to play Luke Cage. But all my friends were like, โItโs got to be Wesley Snipes.โ And I go, โLook, I like Wesley Snipes, but Larry Fishburne is practically Marlon Brando. I think Fish is the man.โ And theyโre like, โYeah, but heโd have to get in shape in a big way. Snipes is that way already!โ And I go, โFuck that! Thatโs not that important! Fuck you, you ruined the whole damn thing!โโ
