The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hits Disney Plus just a week after Marvel fans mourn the end of WandaVision. And while this show may not have fans staying up till all hours of the night with theories, it will bring the same amount of excitement each week.
The Pilot episode is all set up. The show takes place about six months after the events of Endgame and takes a deep dive into life after the “blip.” I won’t spoil anything, but I will say the two men never actually make contact in the first episode.
We see the two Avengers in their separate lives. Both men are trying to get a grip on this new world that they have both been blipped back into.
Sam is left with Captain America’s shield, pondering if he should take up the mantel. We also see his struggle to be a hero to his country and his family.
Bucky is dealing with the PTSD of being “The Winter Soldier” while attempting to live a civilian life. Bucky is a man that’s not only out of his time but also a man recovering from a severely tortured mind.
The whole look and feel is entirely out of the MCU playbook. The action scenes have the same precision and spectacle that you would expect from Marvel.
The drama is also amped up. Not only do we see how the “blip” impacted the Avengers, but also the turmoil it created around the world. There is a clear path to the political and social problems that will come into play.
Like WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is a slow burn character study. With multiple characters and a villain as big as Thanos, there’s no time to dig into who the other Avengers are. Disney Plus provides an excellent outlet to bring stories that feed into the Marvel universe’s next phase.
In conclusion, the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will hook you from the moment you hit play. The script and direction are excellent. You’ll experience the same amount of action as a regular MCU film while also seeing the other side of being a hero.
The first episode is all set up, and there is a looming clock ticking, knowing there are only six episodes. But there was a lot done within one episode, leaving room for a grander story to play out.
While this may not have Easter eggs that will keep fans up at night, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is energetic and on its way to becoming another Marvel masterpiece.
