Non-Spoiler Review: Deadpool & Wolverine

Can Deadpool exist in the context of Disney? This has been the question on everyone’s minds since the House of the Mouse merged with 20th Century. Somehow, Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy have brought the foul-mouthed R-rated superhero into the Wonderful World of Disney. And it works.

The best thing about Deadpool is that he can break the fourth wall. Because of this, we can laugh at the absurdity of the situation, and Deadpool can bring different multiverses together. After explaining how he can now be a Disney product, we dive right into the team-up of the century.

Deadpool/ Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is lost after hanging up his suit. He’s approached by the TVA and is given the chance to become the one thing he wishes to be: Someone who matters. To save his universe, he must find a Wolverine ( Hugh Jackman) to help save his loved ones. After a few mishaps, they’re banished to the “Void,” where Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin) rules a gang of people pruned from their timelines. Deadpool and Wolverine must find a way to get Cassandra to help them find a way home before it’s too late.

This movie is fan service at its finest. It’s packed with easter eggs, cameos, and fourth-wall breaks to excite everyone. After the excitement wears off, you’re left wondering if this helps move the needle regarding the MCU. In a way, it does, but only if they stick with what was introduced. And they introduce a lot. Yes, the cameos are fun, but they serve a purpose, and some of them actually help drive the plot.

As entertaining as Deadpool is, the constant bickering with Wolverine, the jokes upon jokes, and the long fight sequences tend to get a bit monotonous, halting an actual story that will push the MCU narrative forward. Don’t get me wrong, all those things are great, but we’re in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now. There have been multiple movies and series in this new phase, but it still feels like they’re trying to find their footing.

Deadpool & Wolverine is an epic, action-packed romp that will have you marveling at cameos, laughing hysterically, and cheering on fight scenes. The soundtrack is exceptional, and the songs are perfectly placed in every scene. While it is fan service at its finest, some of the jokes become tiresome, and it’s missing an element that will help drive the Marvel Cinematic Universe forward.

For parents wondering if their kids can see this one, It’s not sexually explicit like the previous films, but it is extremely graphic, and there is crude language throughout. So proceed with caution.
