“Nimrods” follows a determined garage band that believes they have a chance to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve. Thrilled by the opportunity, they embark on an exciting road trip filled with adventure and unforgettable memories.
Bandmates Tommy (Mason Thames), his dim-witted best friend Chad (Ryan Foust), and the nerdy punk rocker-in-training Fred (Kylr Coffman) are eager to get to California to perform before their favorite band. However, they don’t realize it’s an elaborate prank orchestrated by Tommy’s brother. When their families refuse to help them reach the concert, the trio resorts to what many teenagers might do: they steal a car and fabricate stories. Together, they set off on a wild road trip filled with hijinks, a bit of trouble, and plenty of fun.
“Nimrods” captures the spirit of early 2000s buddy road-trip comedies that leave you feeling good after watching them. It’s genuinely the buddy road trip movie we’ve been yearning for, featuring characters you root for, songs you love, and a touch of romance when McKenna Grace appears on screen.
Unlike recent Gen Z comedies that are filled with awkward dialogue and shallow scripts, this film authentically portrays teens who are passionate about their dreams and pursue them. The only drawback is that the movie revolves around a band yet features them playing only three times. As a huge Green Day fan (one of my favorite bands), I found myself wanting to rock out every time a song of theirs played in the film. While the plot focuses on the boys trying to get to the concert, it would have been great to hear most of Green Day’s songs as covers.

Although it follows a predictable formula, that familiarity adds to the fun of watching. You can’t help but root for these boys and want to see them succeed. It’s an enjoyable film filled with solid acting and fantastic humor. Is it perfect? No. But it is a silly, heartfelt story that will leave you walking out of the theater with a smile on your face and blasting Green Day all the way home.
