Collette’s Review- Top Gun: Maverick

It’s a sequel over 30 years in the making. But will Top Gun: Maverick take flight? Or will it just be left in the dust?

There’s usually a sense of “why” for most sequels to nostalgic and classic movies. But the discourse surrounding the Top Gun follow-up has been almost all pure excitement. And without spoiling anything, I will say this sequel has not lost that lovin’ feeling.

Tom Cruise returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and is once again mesmerizing on screen. He still holds a boyish charm mixed with the maturity gained through the years.

Pete once again finds himself at the top aviation school in the sequel. Only this time, he’s the teacher and not the student. His class is full of cocky students, but his belated friend Goose’s son Bradley(Miles Teller) sends Pete’s world into a tailspin.

Top Gun: Maverick is the perfect blast of nostalgia mixed with a refreshing new story. Unlike other sequels, Maverick brings back golden memories without overdoing it or having a “you see what we did there” moment. Instead, The callbacks are tasteful and will have fans clutching their hearts.

As wonderful as the old is, the new has to hold up, and I’m happy to say it does. The plot is complex and gripping. There’s also a perfect mix of finishing stories from the past while allowing new characters to develop and flourish.

The new batch of pilots all have their shining moments. Each character was given just enough time to make the audience fall in love and root for each one.

The 1986 film is a classic. But I genuinely believe this sequel is on par with its predecessor. The flight sequences are heart-pounding; there’s a beautiful story and, of course, stunning visuals. There’s intrigue mixed with familiarity, making this film a fun watch from start to finish. The only complaint I have is that Jennifer Connelly’s character needed a little more fleshing out. It took me a good minute to figure out who she was supposed to be. Other than that, I suggest that you catch Top Gun: Maverick on the biggest screen you can find if you feel the need for speed.
