Collette’s Review: Minions The Rise of Gru

Ever since the first despicable me film, the world has known no peace from Minion Mania. The yellow Twinkie look-a-likes charmed not only children but also adults.

The henchmen were so popular they even got their very own movie. Now once again, mouthfuls of gibberish and slapstick comedy fill their sequel.

The film may be called the Rise of Gru, but make no mistake, this is a minions movie. The movie is set in the 70s and is filled with colorful clothes and bopping music. The target audience may not appreciate the time period, but adults will love the style choices and callbacks. We meet the villains that inspired a young Gru, the Vicious 6. With an opening on their team, Gru is first in line to audition for the group. The only problem he’s a kid. Now, Gru has to prove he is worthy of becoming a member. Through it all, his funny sidekicks are by his side.

Minions: Rise of Gru is colorful and funny. There are a plethora of gags that will leave both kids and adults in stitches. Unfortunately, the film hopes to hold the audience’s attention with the slapstick comedy, but adults may find it too monotonous after a while.

That being said, this movie isn’t for adults. It’s a movie for kids and judging by the roaring giggles from my niece; it’s effective. The story is cute enough to hold their attention and simple enough to understand.

So is the Minions sequel perfect? No, but it didn’t have to be. The animation is spectacular, the jokes are funny, and the story is heartwarming. The new characters are entertaining, and the references to the previous films are fun to look out for. Kids will love watching these little yellow henchmen run around, creating havoc. And adults will enjoy the happiness it brings to their children. But make no mistake, there are lots of jokes tailored for parents, too, and there will be moments you’re laughing instead of the kiddos.
