Collette’s Review: Beast

It’s an age-old tale of man versus nature. It may not be an original premise, but it sure is fun. The reason eyes will be on the screen, though, is Idris Elba, and it’s for a good reason. 

He plays Nate Samuels, a doctor who takes his two young daughters, Meredith (Lyana Halley) and Norah (Leah Sava Jeffries), on a safari in South Africa guided by Nate’s best friend Martin (Sharlto Copley). Suddenly their fun vacation turns deadly when they run into a vicious lion out for blood. 

To me, Beast was unexpectedly good. This was a film I went into without knowing a premise or watching a trailer. I expected nothing and was pleasantly surprised by how enthralled I was by the movie. 

While the premise is nothing new, mirroring an almost Cujo-like problem, it is thrilling. The storyline may be predictable, but Director Baltasar Kormákur builds tension well. The pacing is kind of perfect. Every moment you are on the edge of your seat, waiting for a jump scare to happen.

The relationship between the characters was also well done. I believe that’s the perk of having a small leading cast. With a short runtime, we were able to see almost full development for each character. Elba is a force on-screen, especially when it comes to the action sequences. He’s able to make what’s happening feel real. Praise also has to be given to the two young actresses who play his daughters. They are also able sell tough moments. I can’t wait to see what they do next.

There are a ton of action sequences set to beautiful scenery. The film itself doesn’t take big risks when it comes to kills or injuries. Everything is pretty predictable, but it is entertaining. While it may be rated R, it’s only for language and violence. There is some gore, and the beginning may be hard to watch for some because of the violence towards animals. If your kids like thrillers with a lot of action, I’d say this is fine to watch with them. Is it a must-see in theaters? Personally, I don’t think so. This isn’t a blockbuster in the slightest. Beast is just a fun creature feature with great performances.
