The Duke is based on a true story. One that involves a peculiar thief who steals a portrait of the Duke of Wellington in this bubbly comedy. This delightful film is a sweet swan song for director Roger Michell.
Jim Broadbent takes on the role of Kempton Button, a 60-year-old cab driver with a mission to fight for the lower classes. After stealing the painting, he sends multiple ransom notes vowing to return it as long as the government invests in the care of the elderly.
His engaging and charming performance will have you smiling from ear to ear. Helen Mirren plays his wife, Dorthy, and while I feel like she was underused, she shines in every scene. But the true scene-stealer is Matthew Goode as Kempton’s lawyer. His sophisticated and refined attitude plays well against Broadbent’s quirkiness.
The final verdict? The Duke is a fun and enjoyable romp. Its fast-paced direction mixed with a stellar score helps move the story along nicely. The script drolls at certain points, but it’s forgiven because of the charming performances. It’s a lovely little movie that will leave you with a big smile on your face.
