If you have watched even five minutes of Netflix’s Stange Superhero series, The Umbrella Academy, you know how quirky and insane the story can get. As the show comes to a close, the fourth and final season is no different. But is it a fond farewell? Or will it have you begging for a better ending?
As the season starts, our fearless heroes are just …ordinary. Following the events of season 3, the Hargreeves family is left powerless for six years. In a mirror to the show’s pilot, each member is shown how they now have to live their lives just like anyone else. It’s an interesting intro that just doubles down on how clever this show actually is.
After multiple attempts to save the world, timelines have been scattered, and pieces of each branched universe start falling into each other, creating phantom memories for the average person. The family must now find a way to regain their powers and stop the world from ending… Again
Previous seasons of The Umbrella Academy were given to fans with ten episodes to tell the whole story arc; the final season was only six, and you feel the loss of those four extra episodes. How can you save the world in six episodes and have it be completely satisfying? The first two episodes are a perfect set-up for the season, but then the show takes a turn. As the series nears its end, questions are left unanswered, the story gets more complex, and the plot holes become extremely apparent. Some fans may feel completely satisfied, while others may throw their remote at the wall.
Overall, the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy is just shy of being a perfect send-off. The plot is deliciously bonkers, and the twists add a lot to the family’s lore. Unfortunately, the season starts to drag with unnecessary plot lines that could have been scrapped to fill plot holes and answer burning questions about unseen characters. As always, the family is a delight to watch. Their constant bickering and familial love are a joy; I wish we had a few more episodes to fully get our feel of the Hargreeves. Lately, streaming services have been canceling big-budget shows without giving viewers any resolution. So, It is a blessing that Netflix gave fans a farewell, no matter how they may feel about it. Personally, after mulling it over, I feel it was a nice send-off, but it just left too many plot holes and needed a proper number of episodes to give the fully satisfying ending it deserved.
