Collette’s Review: Anything’s Possible

My love for romantic comedies is no secret. I gush over the cheesy dialogue and predictable plot. But it’s always the cliche tropes that get me. While the familiar is great, it often becomes tiresome and robotic. But Billy Porter’s directorial debut is carving a new path and bringing representation to the forefront.

Kelsa (Eva Reign) is a confident high school girl who just happens to be trans. She seems to have the important aspects of her life figured out now, her main goal is to step away from the town where everyone knows her and venture into a new world. Romance was the last thing on her mind, but sometimes a crush sneaks up on you. When Khal (Abubakr Ali) shoots his shot at love, Kelsa can’t help but fall.

Porter’s delightfully sweet coming-of-age story is truly groundbreaking. It brings characters we rarely see on-screen represented in a raw and true way. Much like John Hughes films, Anything’s Possible highlights the teenage romantic troubles that blend in with today’s generation. And it’s done beautifully.

In the past, many LGBTQIA+ films have been built on trauma and shock factor. Now, it feels like a door has finally been opened to LGBTQIA+ creators who have endless stories to tell. Also, Hollywood is finally casting actors who represent the characters they’re playing.

Why do rom-coms become tiresome? It’s because we’ve already watched 30 films with characters that look the same and have similar backgrounds. When you start representing other cultures, humans, and themes, stories become fresh, and people at home can finally see themselves on screen.

This story is a step in the right direction. Anything’s Possible is unapologetic, romantic, light, bold, funny, and sweet. Not only is it littered with representation, but it’s also wildly entertaining. This one feels like it will be on everyone’s comfort movie list (I know it’s now on mine). So throw the popcorn in the microwave, get a comfy seat, and enjoy this delectably adorable film on Amazon Prime.

Incredibly awkward. Fantastically sarcastic, and very, very small. Lover of movies, musicals, & TV.
