Review: Come From Away

As a fan of the Great White Way, who doesn’t live in New York, you rely on tours and filmed versions of shows to scratch the musical itch. Unfortunately, there haven’t been many that gave you the best seat in the house … until now. The filming of Hamilton set the bar for Broadway recordings and will hopefully have more riding its coattails. Apple TV Plus saw this opportunity and is the first to do so with Come From Away.

There is a weight that comes with this recording. Not only was this performance filmed to honor the twentieth anniversary of our countries most tragic day, but this performance was also held during a global pandemic. A pandemic that caused the curtain to close on Broadway for over a year. This special performance was also filled with survivors and front-line workers, which makes it even more special.

On September 11th, 2001, 38 planes were diverted to the small town of Newfoundland, and the townsfolk had to figure out how to take care of 7,000 visitors. The Tony-Nominated story is told through 18 cast members (each playing multiple roles), with some chairs, and a few tables.

With a limited cast and set, Come From Away somehow manages to fully encapsulate what it was like to be in that town. Each cast member completely changes character right in front of your eyes with a switch of an accent and a jacket.

Nothing will ever compare to seeing a Broadway show in person, but this was brilliantly staged and beautifully filmed. Because the cameras gave you a front seat, you’re able to see every emotion and feel every note. It felt like you were on stage with them, living out every moment in the small town. If you’re looking for a story of kindness as we remember 9/11, watch this musical. It will fill your heart with hope.

Incredibly awkward. Fantastically sarcastic, and very, very small. Lover of movies, musicals, & TV.
